The Internet is a global network of interconnected networks that use TCP/IP protocols or communicate with TCP/IP networks via gateway, allowing the usage of e-mail, remote logging, databank transfer, web news, WWW and other similar services and tools. |

HTML is a set of standardized signs i.e. codes, developed from SGML standard. HTML describes the appearance of a web page. Documents in HTML are easily transferrable and can be viewed on any computer with browser programs.
HTML language exploits the signs placed within two brackets, activating in this way the text written between the signs (an example for italic <I>tekst</I>).
URL - Uniform Resource Locator – a unicode address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. URL consists of letters, numbers and interpunction signs.
The first part of the address indicates the data type that is accessed and what protocol to use for data transfer (example: http protocol) while the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. URL address is case sensitive so that the user should pay attention while entering a URL, because two similar addresses at the first sight (in the example listed bellow) can indicate two different databases:
http://www.medianis.net/usluge/online.html
http://www.medianis.net/usluge/ONLINE.html
World Wide Web, also known as WWW or Web, is a set of information that can be accessed through hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP).
World Wide Web and HTTP:
- Enable the creation of "links" from one information to another;
- Can contain references for sound, graphics, video encoding, etc,.
They "understand" other Internet protocols, such as: ftp, gopher, and telnet.
Electronic mail or e-mail, enables the transfer of information among computers and people on the Internet. It is the most exploited Internet resource.
Just like you can send a regular post office letter to different addresses, an e-mail can be sent to different e-mail recipients. An e-mail address identifies a person and a computer as the subjects in exchanging e-mail messages. A typical e-mail adress looks like this:
username@host.subdomen.domen-second-level.domen-first-level
Examples:
jankov@medianis.net
petarj@yahoo.com
FTP - File Transfer Protocol (data transfer protocol) is a part of TCP/IP protocols. It is a set of rules enabling data tranfer among computers.
FTP functions according to client/server principle. Client program allows client-server communication with the aim of information and services access on the server. Transferrable databanks are placed on computers called FTP servers. In order to access these databanks, FTP client program has to be used. It is in fact an interface that enables the user to locate a databank and initiate the process of transfer.
Telnet is a protocol or a set of rules that enables connection from one computer to another one. The second name for this process is a `remote login`. The computer initiating the connection represents a local computer while the computer being connected to is called a remote or `host` computer. The remote computer can be placed in a neighbouring premise, another city or country.
Although some computers require an account and password, others allow access to the resources without demanding these parametres. Telnet enables access to various resources throughout the world, such as library catalogues, databanks and other Internet tools and applications. |
