ADSL – What is it?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – is a new service of Medianis. In comparison to the common on-line access by means of a `leased line` intended mostly for business users, or wireless systems, ADSL is based on the infrastructure common to a great number of households and business premises – the copper line.
This kind of access makes the service very popular and available to various profiles of clients, from home users to middle and larger enterprises.
Technical characteristics of ADSL?
- The existing phone line is used (without party telephone line, PCM or FM devices)
- Transfer rate in both directions is not the same – the downstream (data transfer you receive) is bigger than the upstream (data transfer you send)
- Frequency range from 100KHz-1.1MHz
- Data transfer is 200 times as fast as the analogue line
- Parallel usage of phone talk and data transfer

Advantages of ADSL in comparison to dial-up access?
- On-line internet access - 24h
- No need for dial-in connecting and disconnecting
- Fast data transfer rate
- Phone impulses for data transfer are not charged – only the impulses used for phone talk are charged
- Phone line is always available
- Usage of more demanding services:
- Video On Demand (VOD)
- Video Supervising
- TV Signal Transfer
ADSL system equipment and its implementation?
Firstly, it is important to ascertain technical availability for ADSL implementation (whether there is a party phone line, PCM or FM). In order to test technical conditions at the user`s home, Medianis sends a request to `Telekom` together with the data stated in the Users` On-line Application Form.
In case that technical conditions are met, the physical implementation consists of the splitter set-up (device separating frequency range in two parts: one for speech and another for data transfer) in the phone line. The splitter is then connected to the phone device (for phone talk) and ADSL modem (for data transfer) which is connected to your PC by means of USB or Ethernet connection.
The price for ADSL Internet Access?
In common dial-up access the user is charged by `Telekom` both for phone talk impulses and impulses used for internet connection. ADSL internet access is independent from phone impulses, so that the users are charged for Internet services by Medianis as their ADSL provider, while the phone impulses used for talk are charged by Telekom.
